Ethnographic Research
Adjunct Faculty at National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi 1995-2003

  • Adjunct Faculty at under-graduate and graduate level courses for over 50 diagnostic surveys of different craft communities and tribes in and around India.
  • Using primary and secondary research methods focused on observation of handicrafts, their design development and production methods, historical context, cultural human factors and socio-economic factors.
  • The duration of the course was eight weeks. The course started with learning primary and secondary research methods, extensive documentation, design development and presentation to an external jury panel.

Sample 1: Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India - Onges, a hunter – gathering tribe
These Onges, a small group of thirty-nine people are all that remain of originally ten tribes. The Onges claim to have descended from Maidik and Kat, the first man and woman. The leader or “erjun” takes all the decisions for the tribe and tries to retain the conventional social system and its customs.

Sample 2: Lahaul & Spiti, India - two remote valleys on the Indo-Tibet border
At  the height of 3000m to 4800m, a land of fascinating Buddhist art and culture. The monasteries of Lahaul & Spiti are rich repositories of ancient murals, Thanka paintings, wood carvings, tapestry and idols.
